Journey through Auckland's colonial past with Canoe & Kayak.

Puhoi, pronounced 'Poo-hoy'. It roughly translates to mean "slow water" in Maori. These slow moving waters gently meander its way through the historic Bohemian Puhoi settlement eventually flowing to the Wenderholm Regional Park. You will see Pukeko, Herons, Kingfisher's and many other water birds enjoying the native bush that borders the 8km of flat tidal stream.

This short stretch of river to Auckland's north has had a long and interesting history of human interaction. The Wenderholm area had been inhabitated for close to 1000 years by Maori, and was the focal point of a historic peace treaty between warring tribes.
The settlement at Puhoi was started in 1863 by a group of European immigrants from Bohemia (now Czech Republic). While the area is now easily accessible to Auckland via State Highway 1, in the early days of its settlement the river at high tide provided the only means of passage. Many of the pioneering buildings remain for you to explore.
