Ultralight Boatbuilding - How You Can Build Light, Elegant and Simple Boats and Canoes Using Plywood and Epoxy.
By Thomas J. Hill with Fred Stetson.
Paper back, 215mm x 280mm, 134 pages, monochrome photographs and drawings.
This book has long been regarded as a standard work for the learner-builder of lightweight dinghies and canoes. It is one in a series called - lugubriously - "you-don't-have-to-be-an-expert" books. It describes a specific design, somewhere between a yacht tender and a canoe - closer to the latter and hence the placement on this page. The authors take the builder through every stage from concept, design, lofting, tooling and building and finishing.
Whilst we infer that the book is a classic it is modern in its use of materials and construction, fastenings and finishes. It is very clearly illustrated with a large number of good quality black and white photographs and an adequate narrative.
The practical value of the book goes well beyond instruction in building the Ultralight design featured, and will serve as an excellent primer for anyone seeking to build a pulling vessel using plywood chine construction.
