Introduction to Sea Kayaking

 SEA KAYAKING STAGE ONE SKILLS COURSE

A comprehensive course designed to cover the skills required to become a technically correct and safe paddler. The course is arranged in a progressive manner to allow you to develop the techniques and your confidence at an enjoyable pace with great end results.
 
PROGRAMME

FRIDAY EVENING 7.00PM TO 8.30PM: WET EXITS, WATER CONFIDENCE & RESCUES
Fletcher Challenge Energy Aquatic Centre indoor heated pool. (Kawaroa Park)
Here we will teach you about the easy ways of entering and exiting a kayak along with the methods of self and group rescues - all in the warm waters of our pool.
 
SATURDAY 9.00AM TO 4.00PM: PADDLE & BOAT HANDLING SKILLS AND RESCUES
Meet at Canoe & Kayak Taranaki shop (6/631 Devon Rd, Waiwakaiho, New Plymouth)
Paddle skills and rescue techniques are the main way of preventing potential problems and guaranteeing enjoyment so the day is spent giving you the skills and practise time to allow you to develop them.
 
SUNDAY 8.30AM TO 4.00PM: PLANNING, PACKING AND GROUP CONTROL                    
Meet at Canoe & Kayak Taranaki shop (6/631 Devon Rd, Waiwakaiho, New Plymouth)
We head off for the day to cover the issues of paddling in the Taranaki area, including weather, basic navigation, trip planning, communications, group management, safety equipment and procedures whilst having an enjoyable days outing. The day is spent leisurely exploring an area of the Taranaki waterways.
 
 
INFORMATION
BRING: Warm changes of clothes / raincoat / Polypropylene or woollen tops and bottoms / Wet suit / Windproof and waterproof jacket.
Hats for sun and cold / Sunscreen / sun glasses (a cord is recommended to prevent loss) / wet weather foot wear -old sandshoes or dive booties.

 

1st YEAR CLUB MEMBERSHIP, SATURDAY LUNCH AND KAYAK HIRE ARE INCLUDED IN FEES.

 

BOOKING CONDITIONS
  • No credits will be given for courses cancelled or transferred two days before commencement of the course. 
  • Refunds will not be given.
  • If for any reason the course cannot go ahead as scheduled, participants will be transferred to another date.
  • Participants in courses acknowledge that kayaking has inherent risks and assume all responsibility for any injuries incurred.
  • Participants must follow all instructions given to them by Canoe & Kayak staff.
