casual games and organize teams Thursday 12th May 7.15pm
League starts Thursday 19th May Possibly a later start as there may be a couple of school league games first.
Its that time of the year again and this game always brings lots of laughter and fun as well as honing in on those kayaking skills. We are going to start next Thursday. This first evening is a muck around day to have some fun and sort out teams. We always start with a social game for beginners where the play is a little slower and no pushing. So don`t make it an excuse not to come because you don`t know how to play. Make sure you are there! Cost $50 for the 10 week league or $7.00 night for casual. Next Thursday is free! Sooo See you at Bell Block swimming pool. (Across the road from the Warehouse) 7.15pm Thursday 12th. PS All gear including kayaks is provided.
Lower Waiwakaiho this Saturday
7th May 1.30 at the shop or 1.45sh at the Meeting Of Waters. Hot soup and buns for afterwards.
Looks like it should be a nice level for Saturday afternoon, If too much rain there will be a change of plans. Contact the shop 7695506.
Mokau river White Water section.
This Sunday 8th May
Thought it would be good to have another paddle down the Mokau Grade 3-4 section this Sunday. If you havn't done this before and not sure if you are up to it the grade 4 rapids are walkable with plenty of time to get out before the rapids, you can give me a call for more information. The level is at 1.5m at the moment with rain forecast Friday evening and Sat morning. Leaving Waitara 7.30am from the BP garage we can take 5 more in the van with a trailer if needed. Allow about 4-5hrs for paddle so bring a light lunch for the paddle.
Could possibly be a case of use it or loose it as the case for the Mokau dam is likely to be up again this year.
Please let me us know if you are keen. 7695506 or 0276083844
May Sat 28th - Mon 30th
Mokau to Kawhai.
I sit out on my deck each day (Well I don`t have time everyday, but often) and look out over at the coast line all the way to Kawhia and keep saying to myself, "One day I am going to paddle that!" so I guess I better make it happen. Since we have paddled from Waitara to Mokau at various intervals we thought we might as well start at Mokau so as to shorten the trip.
Unless the weather is really lovely for this weekend , this trip will be for stronger paddlers only. The days won`t be too long. Around 30 k`s. However because it is the west coast (and we all know our coast well. LOL) we will be dealing with swells and surf landings. Should be great though. I think our coast line is one of the greatest as far as rock formations & cliffs go. If you are not sure if you are counted as one of the stronger paddlers then give us a ring. Because it is local you may be able to join us at various stages or if there are people that need to come back early as they have to work on Monday then I am sure we can work that out to. So if you are keen then let us know in the next week or two, so we can put your name down. Peter is going to be the leader for this one.
June 4th- 6th (Queens birthday weekend)
Lake Tarawera.
This is always a hit. Great for families and beginners but the more experience enjoys this one too. Allot of thermal activity on this lake. We camp at a hot water beach so you can soak up the hot water in the evenings. Its lovely. We took a German couple on this trip once and there comment was...where else in the world can you paddle on a hot water lake!!. There is also a really neat walk we do where you see this waterfall come straight out from the cliff. (Underwater river) great to see. We also wheel our kayaks over to lake rotomanu which is the sight of where the pink and white terraces use to be. Lots of thermal activity there too. Really neat trip, so let us know if you are keen to come. Pete is going to organize this one.
Basic plan. Leave about 4pm Friday and stay the night at Blue Lakes camping ground, Cabins may be availiable but we can't book for only 1 night over Queens birthday untill the week before. Tent sites are $18.50 pp or $11.00 for children up to 14yrs. Staying Sat at Hot Water beach DOC camp $8.00 adult and $4 Child. Possibly stay 2 nights there or 1 night at the lake outlet. Depends on weather, Temp and group as this campsite can be a bit cold that time of year. Back on Monday evening. Expect some cold conditions so be prepared.
Allow about $45 dollars for fuel PP .
Total of 79.50 for adults plus food for adults and $64.00 children.
September 10th-11th.
Tangarakau.
We need plenty of water for this trip, hence we have it booked for spring. This is a beautiful local river with some interesting grade 2 rapids to negotiate in your sea kayaks. (Nothing too difficult.) It even has about a two meter horse shoe shape, waterfall. I`m not kidding, lol. It is really easy to paddle over. (I did it in a Canadian last time) but you can portage it if you don`t want to paddle over it. The neat thing about this river is the fossils. We found some really neat ones last time, the kids loved digging them all up and we will leave plenty of time to do this for those who are this way incline. Mark has a world of knowledge about this being a geologist. Warwick is organizing this trip.
Oct 1st and 2nd.
Kawhia.
This is Marks famous trip that he runs once or twice every year. I have missed it every time and are really keen to join him. Kawhia is a beautiful place and Mark tends to go somewhere different each time, so if you have been once, you will still enjoy doing it again. So keep your eyes on this spot to find out where the paddle is this year.
Oct 22nd-24th. (Labour weekend)
East Bay of Plenty.
Peter Bennet is running this one. Don`t know anything about it. LOL But I have full trust in Peter that it will be fantastic!
Yaah... And now we are back into summer!
Nov 19th-20th.
Rangatiki river
Sea kayak trip or long white water kayak like a dancer etc. Get in bellow the River lodge. Again simple grade two rapids (with a two grade threes that most will portage) that are fun to negotiate in a sea kayak. It will be good for those who havn't done any white water paddling to join a training day on the Waitara river before we go. My Pete is organizing this one. He is so wonderful!
Taranaki Anniversary trip!
March 12th 2012
For those who are new to the club, we always do a big trip for Taranaki anniversary. It may be about 5 or 6 days so its great to book your holidays as soon as poss. Next year we are doing Great Barrier Island. Some are planning to paddle over this year. Others will go by ferry. Brendan is organizing this one, so keep your eyes on this spot for further info. If you need dates now to book it, give Brendan a ring and you can sort dates that will suit you. Ph 7695838
That's the trips plan so far. As you know, e-mails will come through each week with more details and other smaller trips. Also white water trips. But it is good to ring the shop or reply e-mail if you are keen on any of these trips so we can get a little bit of idea what sort of paddlers we are catering the trips for. Also if you are planning to do a day paddle, don`t hesitate to give the shop a ring so we can let others know. Ph 7695506. Wasn`t it great last weekend with Tim! What an inspiration he is. Are you all keeping up with his web sight? nzkayaker.com
