Lake Waikaremoana
This is a beautiful part of the country to paddle. Situated approx 60km drive inland from Wairoa in the Hawkes Bay. "You are in the midst of Te Urewera, the third largest National park in New Zealand, and the largest remaining tract of Native Forest in the North Island. The primeval rain forest is home to many native birds and remains today as virgin as it was in the 1840's, when Pioneer Missionary William Colenso traversed this remote homeland of Tuhoe, “Children of the Mist". The plan is to travel by van and kayak trailer on the 23rd Feb and then spend the night at the Lake Waikaremoana Camp ground. The next 3 nights will be spent in the lakes many DOC camp sites. We will return to the campground late on the 27th and spend the night there before driving back to Wellington on the 28th Feb arriving around 5pm. All nights will be in tents and you will need to be self sufficient with food and camping gear. Paddle distances will be around 18-24kms per day. Most around 18km. As with any trip a medium level of fitness is required. Cost for the trip - TBA depending on numbers but should be around $325.00. This will cover transport for you and kayak, fuel, DOC and campground fees. If you have any questions please call us at the shop. 4776911 Trip leader Neil Thompson
