Taupo - Introduction to Kayaking Course

A comprehensive 2 day course designed to cover the skills required to become a technically correct and safe paddler. The course is arranged in a progressive manner to allow you to develop the techniques and your confidence at an enjoyable pace with great end results.

PROGRAMME
SAT AM: WET EXITS, WATER CONFIDENCE & RESCUES, PADDLE & BOAT HANDLING SKILLS.
Meet at the Taupo Shop (77 Spa Road, Taupo)
We work on confidence routines, wet exits, self and peer rescues – either at AC Baths or Hot Water Beach… depending on the weather!!  The remainder of the day is spent on the water practising these fundamentals and working on your personal kayaking skills. 

  

PM: PADDLE TECHNIQUE
On Lake Taupo or Lake Hinemaiaia depending on weather.

 

SUN AM/PM: PLANNING, PACKING AND GROUP MANAGEMENT
Meet at the Taupo Shop.
Today is all about arming you with the knowledge to make safe decisions while kayaking... we discuss all the potential issues one might encounter when paddling in the Lake Taupo area. Includes: weather, basic navigation, trip planning, communications, group management, safety equipment and procedures… all while having an enjoyable day on the water.

INFORMATION
WHAT TO BRING:
Warm changes of clothes / polypropylene or woollen tops and bottoms / wet suit / windproof and waterproof jacket / hats for sun and cold / sunscreen / sun glasses (a cord is recommended to prevent loss) / wet weather foot wear -old sandshoes or dive booties / packed lunch. We have a great selection of paddle gear and good advice at the shop!!
