Purewa Creek and Judges Bay

31 March, Leader is Pauline.
Meet at ‘The Landing’ at Okahu Bay to explore Purewa Creek and the new-and-improved Judges Bay.
Meet at 12:30pm for 1:00pm departure, returning by 4.30pm.

We will be taking advantage of the high tide to explore as far up the creek as we can – it’s peaceful and sheltered as it narrows from a wide basin to mangroves and if you are lucky some bird life – before heading under the railway line to visit Judges Bay. The bay was refurbished before Christmas, and has new sand/jetty/ diving platforms.

We will stop at Judge's Bay for afternoon tea (so make sure you have lunch before we set out), maybe a short swim or visit the rose gardens or explore St Stephen's Church, and return to Okahu Bay via the north side of Tamaki Drive.

The distance is about 11km – so a nice short paddle to have in your repertoire for days when you want to paddle but the harbour is a bit too blowy.

The Landing has a steep and wide concrete ramp.  We will be grouping up on the eastern side of the public ramp – closest to Fergs. It can be quite busy on the weekends, so if you plan to drive onto the ramp to drop off please ensure you are organized for a short stop – or park and we can carry/wheel loaded kayaks down.

Suitable for new beginners, this is a short and sheltered trip.

Facilities - parking for cars is free in white-lined spaces, if you have a trailer you must park in the yellow-lined spaces and pay.  Toilets & drinking water at The Landing and Judges Bay.

Additional Hazards -
  • Small boat traffic close to launching point, and we will cross the entrances to a couple of marinas – need to keep a close watch and apply give-way rules.
  • Judges Bay did have a water quality issue earlier in January but is fine now – will check again on the day before swimming.
  • There can be lot of flowering privet up the creek – so if that might affect you, be prepared.
