Motuora Island WeekendMotuora Island Weekend, with Diana and Luke, 24-25 Sep. UPDATE - Due to bad weather expected on Sunday there has been a slight change in plans. Paddle across to Motuora as planned, do some work as directed then paddle back to Te Muri to camp for the night (Te Muri is on the mainland just south of Sullivan's Bay). Sunday, pack up and go for a coastal paddle before returning to the cars. Alternative - as above but going straight back to the cars making it a day trip only.
Saturday meet at Sullivan’s Bay ready for launch at 0930. Paddle the 7km stretch to Motuora Island (1-1.5 hours). After setting up camp and lunch there will be 3 options
Suitable for strong and confident beginners. It is not a long trip but the 7km crossing is open water and it can get very rough and windy. If the wind is predicted between 15 and 20 knots only intermediate paddlers will be able to come. Alternatives will need to be considered if the wind is greater than 20knots.
You need to be self-sufficient with camping equipment, food etc. There is a nice camp ground on Motuora, with toilets and good water. Book your campsite here...
You need to pay for overnight car parking at Sullivan's Bay. This is $5 per vehicle per night. The easiest way is to do it by phoning 366 2000 in advance and pay by credit card; or take $5 to leave in the box - and you must phone the ranger from the phone provided at the information stand. Biosecurity awareness - Please ensure that your footwear is clean of soil or seeds that may introduce unwanted weeds to Motuora. Also ensure that there are no pests stowing away in your bags (insects or rodents). Tools are provided for the working bee but you should take suitable footwear and gloves. For more information... I have a list of recommended gear for a camping trip, email the shop if you would like a copy. Hire kayaks available.
