Lake Waikaremoana
Lake Waikaremoana - Waitangi weekend, 3-6 Feb. Leader is Russell.
The drive down is about 5 hours so you will need to travel down on Thursday 2nd Feb. The last 2 hours are narrow, windy, gravel road. We will stay at the Lake Waikaremoana Motorcamp on Thursday evening. This is a very nice campsite with cabins, great facilities and a small shop which has basic supplies. Please note that there are no fast food outlets within a 2 hour drive (a mistake we made on our first trip). This is a great trip, stunning scenery, can be challenging. Suitable for strong beginners. On the first day we cover 28km. This is at a leisurely pace, but you do need to be fit enough. Conditions on the lake can get very rough and can become nasty very quickly so you need to be able to cope with that. The weather at Lake Waikaremoana is changeable and can be cold, wet and snowing, even in summer - be prepared. We will be camping and you need to be fully self-sufficient. Camp fees (other than the first night) are $12.20 per person per night. On the morning of Fri 3rd we will load up and paddle to the far end of the lake (this is the longest day). Saturday will be a short paddle along the coast with a walk up to see a stunning waterfall (about 30 min each way), before continuing. Monday is a short paddle back to the cars and travel home. Showers available at the campsite before you drive home - $5 per person last time we were there. I suggest that you have a complete set of clothes, towel and shower stuff in a separate bag in the car (saves hunting through stinky stuff to find your gear). You need to make your own bookings and note that there is a limit of 20 campers per site. As of 9 Jan there are no bookings for any campsite, but these are likely to start filling soon so don't delay. For the Waikaremoana Motorcamp go here... and book for the evening of Thursday 2 Feb. For the DOC huts go here... You need to book for Friday 3 Feb Waipaoa Saturday 4 Feb Waiharuru Sunday 5 Feb Tapuaenui We will have a pre-trip meeting on the evening of Monday 30 Jan at 7pm. We will discuss gear, logistics, car pooling and answer any questions. You need to be a current Yakity Yak Club member to join us. Click here to register online... |
