Basic Whitewater skills for Sea Kayakers
Instructor is Trevor. This course is aimed at those who are already sea kayaking, and who want to work on some basic skills to go onto easy rivers.
This will be on the out-going tide in the Orewa estuary which gives us some ideal conditions, and we will be using sea kayaks. Meet at the southern end of Orewa beach just where the bridge goes over the estuary (car parking on the left). Be ready for the water by 9am at the latest! Please don't be late because we need to make the most of the outgoing tide. We will start with a safety briefing and a discussion of river dynamics - just what an eddy is and how it forms; how water really can flow upstream; and other things you don't know that you don't know. (Note to self - start at, or just before high tide for Auckland) We will then get on to the water for some practical instruction. We will cover paddling in moving water, ferry gliding, eddy turns, low brace turns, and depending on time, capsizes and rescues in moving water, throw-bagging, combat swimming, and anything else you want to try. This is an ideal introduction to those who are going on the Whanganui River trip for the first time. It will also improve your sea kayaking skills by increasing your confidence. Cost is $75, kayak hire is extra. What to bring - usual kayak safety gear including paddle float & pump, and if you have them, VHF radio, helmet, and throw-bag. You will be getting wet, so dress appropriately. We will have a break part way through so bring lunch/snack/coffee as appropriate, and those who want to can adjourn to the Plantation Cafe for lunch/ice-cream/coffee afterwards.
