Join Canoe and Kayak Bay of Plenty on one of our most poular tours and explore the waters around the Mauao (Mount Maunganui) by kayak in a small group. This is the tour for you if you love sealife and other animals that inhabit the shoreline.
This iconic landmark, otherwise known as 'Mauao' is found at the end of a peninsula, in the Bay of Plenty, and is best admired from the water. This extinct volcanic cone is sacred to the local Iwi and is full of local mythology with it's name meaning 'caught by the dawn'. Setting out from Pilot Bay on the harbour side of the Mount enjoy the stunning scenery with views of the harbour and Matakana Island as we travel around Mauao in to the crystal clear Pacific Ocean.
Exploring the craggy rocks just off the Mount that can only be reached by boat we look for the seals that frequently sunbathe and laze on the rocks. We head on towards and past Moturiki or Leisure Island (still just connected to the mainland) and to Motuotau Island otherwise known as Rabbit Island (if everyone is happy and not too tired). This island is a scenic reserve and is full of interesting caves, rock formations, seals and penguins.
Learn about the geology, the sealife, the Iwi myths and legends as you paddle and generally soak up the relaxed Mount lifestyle.
The Mount and the surrounding islands are a haven for sea life. Keep an eye out for Sting Rays, Blue Penguins, dolphins and seals which are commonly seen in the Bay and for Orca which come in to the harbour during the summer to feed on their favourite food, the Rays.
We supply FREE refreshments at the end of the tour.
Photos are FREE - we will take as many photos as possible during the trip and we will email you after the tour to view and download them from our facebook page.
